At an events expo I heard Dorothea Jones speak about the loss of pubs and third spaces, places where connection doesn’t require money or permission. It took me back to my first dates: pubs, because restaurants weren’t affordable. Those pubs made dating possible for us.

    Wed 14th Jan
The next day a good friend told me she wanted to come to the next event but couldn’t afford to right now. I gave her a free ticket, no hesitation, but it made me wonder how many other close people were staying home for the same reason.

    Thurs 15th Jan
I attended When Black Men Talk in Shoreditch. About forty Black men speaking openly about pressure, discipline, body dysmorphia, money, and loads else. I found it powerful. The event was free to attend.

These three moments shifted something for me.

If connection is only for people who can pay, it stops being real connection.

Community shouldn’t be capped by cost.

There will now be a range of free to attend events.
